Drivers have been warned to carry out a major winter check on their car – otherwise they risk a fine of up to £ 10,000.
According to experts, bad weather can be a nightmare for inexperienced drivers, and especially for those not used to keeping their vehicle in compliance with safety standards.
Many are unaware that an overly worn, bare tire profile – and that it is also hugely dangerous – can result in a fine of £ 2,500 per wheel.
That means a vehicle with four bad tires could potentially set drivers back £ 10,000.
Legally speaking, a tire’s tread must be a minimum of 1.6mm to pass, but anything less than 3mm can drastically reduce performance.
And there’s a quick check to make sure your vehicle complies with regulations, says young driver specialist Marmalade.
Drivers should check their profile with a 20p coin to make sure there is more than 3mm before traveling.
If the rim disappears when it falls into the tread, it is safe to drive the tires.
Marmalade has now published a winter driving guide to help new drivers through the colder months.
CEO Crispin Moger said: “As a new driver, if you are not yet to experience winter conditions on the road, they can prove to be a bit of a challenge.
“We thought it would be helpful for new drivers in the UK to have this guide to hand when they needed it.
“It offers some pearls of wisdom as we enter the winter months.
“New drivers have not had the best time in the last six months and many will want to experience the freedom of driving on the road and making sure they can do it safely is a real focus for us.”
The guide also offers some essential tips, such as the exact settings you should have your heaters and fans set to to easily clean your window screens as it can often be difficult to find the right settings
It is especially important as you could be fined £ 60 if your windows are too fogged when it’s cold outside and £ 1,000 if driving the obstacle is considered careless.
