A mother accused of strangling her three kids to death was fearful of losing custody to a violent ex, it has been reported.
The victims, three girls aged eight months, three and nine, died after allegedly being attacked by their mum who then called the police on herself.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that all three children were suffocated, The Mirror reports.
According to local outlets the 31-year-old mum, believed to be from Nepal, attacked her children in Vienna, Austria, to stop them being put in the care of her partner.
The mother had separated from the ex and had an injunction in place to stop him from going near the family.
This order was set to expire in September, according to claims in Weiner Zeitung.
It is alleged that the mum told detectives she wanted to kill herself when she called an emergency number.
Officers were sent to the family’s apartment in the suburban Donaustadt district at 5.20am on Saturday, and arrested the mum, who had self-inflicted injuries, a spokesperson said.
The bodies of two girls were found dead inside and the eldest was rushed to hospital in a desperate attempt to save her.
Sadly it was too late and she could not be revived.
A statement from local police said: “Today in the early hours of the morning a woman, aged 31, called the police emergency number and stated that she had just killed her children and now wanted to kill herself.
“During an immediate search of the home, the police found two girls, aged eight months and three years, who were dead.
“A third girl, aged nine, was taken to hospital, but resuscitation was unsuccessful.”
The mother was found with non-life threatening injuries and was immediately arrested.
The spokesman added: “At the moment, the initial criminal investigation is taking place at the crime scene.
A forensic medical report on the cause of death is still pending.
“A statement from the suspect is not yet available.
“The background to the incident is still unknown.”
