Mysterious 12ft monolith that came out of nowhere disappears from desert

The mysterious monolith that emerged in a desert disappeared days after it was discovered.

It was mysteriously removed after it appeared in the US state of Utah.

The 10-12ft (3m) metal structure was planted in the ground and tucked away in a cove of red rocks, sparking speculation as to how it got there.

But the Utah Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said the monolith has now been removed and there is a mystery as to what happened to it.

The agency said on Facebook, “We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, called the ‘monolith’, has been removed from the public lands of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) by an unknown party.

“The BLM has not removed the structure, which is considered private property.

“We do not investigate privately owned crimes, which are handled by the local sheriff’s office.

“The structure has received international and national attention and we have received reports that an individual or group removed it on the evening of Nov. 27.”

It seems there is as much mystery surrounding what happened to monolith as how it got there in the first place.

The shiny metal structure was spotted by a helicopter pilot and speculation about what it was.

Pilot Bret Hutchings said, “That’s about the strangest thing I’ve come across in all my flying years.

“We joked that one of us suddenly disappears, and then we run to it.

‘We thought this is something NASA has stuck there or something. Are they bouncing satellites off it or something? ‘

It has been compared to the technology portrayed in Stanley Kubrick’s classic 2001 film: A Space Odyssey, while others have compared it to the work of the late artist John McCracken.
