NBA players approve 22-team format to restart and finish season

NBA players are on board with the league’s plan to end the 2019-20 season, although “many details remain to be negotiated,” the National Basketball Players Association said in a statement Friday.

The National Basketball Players Association Board of Player Representatives approved further negotiations with the NBA on Thursday regarding the 22 teams’ return-to-game scenario to restart the season, the remainder of which will be fully staged at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, from July 31.

Under the proposal, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, no more than 1,600 people would be allowed into the NBA bubble, who also reported that games could contain fake sounds of ‘NBA 2K’ sounds – about which Montrezl Harrell of the Clippers tweeted: “I hope they are not serious. ”

After the NBA’s board of governors voted on Thursday to approve the 22 team format before the end of the season, players’ OK is Friday’s latest move as the league works to finalize its complicated reboot plan after a hiatus then started the game was interrupted abruptly on March 11 because of the corona virus pandemic.

All 28 players ‘representatives during the call approved the format, according to The Athletic and ESPN, but there is still work to be done, the players’ organization said.

“Accepting the scenario would still require all parties to agree on all issues relevant to resuming the game,” said the NBPA.

The NBA said on Thursday that it and the players’ association will continue to work with infectious disease specialists, public health experts and government officials to establish a rigorous program to prevent and mitigate the risk associated with COVID-19. Strict safety practices include playing games without fans at the central location where players are tested daily, according to what Commissioner Adam Silver said in an interview on TNT on Thursday.

Those tests will be done overnight, likely using mouth swabs and light nasal swabs instead of the more invasive nasal swab test, said Charania, who also reported that a player who tests positive will be quarantined for at least seven days.

There will be no tracking devices on players, but NBPA leadership emphasized that according to Charania, it will be mandatory for players to remain on the Disney World campus.

According to ESPN player Adrian Wojnarowski, the families of the players, probably three at a time, may arrive after the first round of the playoffs.

There are likely to be two or three preseason games, with practices in Orlando expected to be held within three hours, at a convention center with two courts and weight rooms, Charania tweeted.

Michele Roberts, the NBPA executive director, informed players that the potential start date of December 1 for the start of the 2020-21 season will remain part of a negotiation with the NBA, according to Wojnarowski.

The Lakers and Clippers last played on March 10, after which the Lakers (49-14) led the Western Conference and the Clippers (44-20) were in second place.

They are among the 22 teams with the best records returning to play in a format that reflects the current playoff positions of the teams, plus the six teams currently sixth or less behind eighth in their respective conferences .

The restart of the season begins again with eight seeding games for each returning team, with the possibility of a play-in tournament for the eighth and final playoff seed in each conference, depending on the combined records in the regular season games and seeding games .

Once the playoff field has been set for 16 teams, the NBA playoffs would continue in a traditional four-round conference-based format with the best-of-seven series in each round. The final is said to end October 12 at the latest.
