The Nuggets may go international again.
Denver has significant interest in signing Real Madrid’s Argentinean PG Facundo Campazzo, a competition source told The Denver Post.
The free agency officially opens at 4pm MST on Friday and players can sign contracts starting at 10am on Sunday
Campazzo, 29, is a decorated international player and one of the best passing point guards in Europe. Despite its size (1.20 meters), Campazzo’s vision and feel for the game are elite. The Nuggets have been linked to Campazzo for over a year.
If he landed in Denver, it remains to be seen what role he would have. The Nuggets are well stocked in their backcourt, with starters Jamal Murray and Gary Harris, along with reserves Monte Morris and PJ Dozier.
Wednesday’s draft put combo guard RJ Hampton at No. 24 after the Nuggets moved back to the first round with New Orleans. And after the draft, the Nuggets matched Markus Howard, the NCAA’s scoring leader at Marquette last season, on a two-way contract, a league source said.
Any move at point guard could have a significant impact on Morris, who is looking to sign an extension in Denver. If he doesn’t, he would be an unrestricted free agent off-season. Adding Campazzo could serve as insurance.
