A grieving Olympian has blasted a disgusting scammer for trying to profit from her daughter’s tragic death.
Lisa Curry, who said the pain she is enduring is “unbearable”, warned others after a Facebook page was set up by a heartless scammer asking people for donations.
Three-time Olympic swimmer Ms Curry, 58, and former husband Grant Kenny announced the death of their daughter Jaimi Kenny, on September 13.
The 33-year-old had faced a long battle with an undisclosed illness, reports 7news.
However, News.com.au reported that Jaimi was privately battling an eating disorder and being cared for by a specialist clinic.
While the family were still in shock from the devastating loss, someone had set up a Facebook fund impersonating Lisa’s current husband, Mark Andrew Tabone.
The scammer had created the “Jaimi Kenny Fund” to con people into donating money.
Devastated Lisa urged people to be aware that the page is a hoax.
She posted: “Someone has started a (Donorbox) on Mark Andrew Tabone’s FB page…. this is NOT US…
“It’s also sending friend requests.
“Please do not open anything from this fake account.”
The fake profile and Facebook page has since been removed from the social media site, after users rallied in support of Lisa.
Social media users labelled the page “disgusting, cruel and sick.”
Jaimi died on Monday morning at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
In a statement released by her family, it said: “It goes without saying that this is a very difficult time for family and friends and we trust we will all be allowed to grieve in privacy.
“Our hearts are broken and the pain is immense but we must move forward cherishing every wonderful moment we got to share with our treasured first child.”
In a heart-wrenching Instagram post by Lisa, she also shared a sweet snap of them holding hands.
She wrote: “Thank you so much for the outpouring of love and strength we are receiving. There are so many messages from so many people and it’s difficult to get back to all of you but in time we’ll try.
“Sadly, I know that we are not the only parents who have lost a child… so to all the parents who have lost a child, and to those who will, today, tomorrow… somehow I guess we get through it. The grief is immense and we are allowing it to take its course.
“If I can ask you to do something from Jaimi… right now, go and give your children the biggest hug and tell them how much you love them, and do that every day because you’ll never know if it’s the last day.”
In another tribute she wrote: Our hearts are completely broken. Our beautiful daughter Jaimi has lost her battle with a long-term illness and passed away peacefully in hospital yesterday morning with her loving family by her side.
“So loved. So beautiful. So kind to everyone….So painful. I can barely breathe.
“Jaimi will forever be remembered as a caring, bright and loving soul who always put others before herself. Her love of flowers, cooking, art, decorating, photography, babies, the beach, and helping others will always be remembered.
“We thank all the paramedics, support staff and the incredible team at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for their tireless commitment to give us the extra time we were able to spend with Jaimi.
“Rest in peace my beautiful baby. I will miss you every sunrise, I will miss you when the sun is shining and the birds are singing.
“I will miss you when the clouds are dark and stormy and when the rainbow appears…”
