Police investigating after body of newborn girl found at recycling centre

Detectives are investigating after a newborn baby girl’s body was found in a recycling center.

Officers were called to the Ipswich Road recycling center in Needham Market, Suffolk, when she was found by staff at 3pm on Thursday.

Death is treated as unexplained and an investigation is conducted.

Detective Chief Superintendent Eamonn Bridger has called on the baby’s mother to come forward and seek medical attention in a hospital.

He told the PA news agency: “We reasonably suspect that the baby was less than 48 hours old, which is why we are very concerned about the mother.

“We expect her to need emotional support and urgent medical attention, so we’re calling her directly to contact us so we can help.”

He added, “There is no doubt that she may be afraid, but it is very important that we reach her or talk to someone who may know her.”

The officer said the large investigative unit “maintains a very open mind about the circumstances,” adding that the recycling center received a number of deliveries on Thursday.

Anyone with information is requested to contact Suffolk Police Department at 101 quoting CAD reference 213 of May 14, 2020.
