A shocking video shows the moment a man sneaks up on a police officer and sets him on fire in Mexico.
The appalling crime happened during a protest about the death of Giovanni Lopez, a 30-year-old man allegedly beaten to death by police after he was arrested for not wearing a face mask.
In the footage, recorded on Thursday, a man in whose face is hidden by sunglasses and a mouth covering sneaks up behind a cop on a motorcycle.
He then pours the liquid down the back of his uniform and sets him on fire.
The police officer collapses to the ground and flails momentarily but is then rescued by other cops who beat the flames out.
Enrique Alfaro, Governor of Jalisco, confirmed that the burned cop was injured in the protest along with five other officers.
Three patrol cars were set on fire and destroyed and 26 protesters were arrested.
Demonstrators were shouting “Giovanni was killed by the state” after his family found him dead in a hospital morgue, allegedly with brain trauma and a bullet wound in his ankle, after he was detained.
It is alleged he was tortured then beaten to death by cops on May 4.
Three people have been arrested in relation to Giovanni’s death, a police officer, a commissioner, and a middle-ranking officer, local media reports.
Governor Alfaro claimed that “interests coming from Mexico City, with the goal of causing instability” were behind the protests and said that no violent acts were committed against the protesters.
He said: “Guadalajara police and state police met the requirements of the circumstances and knew to resist without falling into provocation”.
