A pregnant woman was left dead and her baby fighting for its life after they were hit by a hail of bullets fired through the wall of their home.
Tragic Rabiah Ahmad was killed when a usually quiet street in Columbia, Maryland in the US, was turned in to a violent crime scene.
Ms Ahmad was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center but sadly passed away, aged 30-years-old.
The victim had been hit by one bullet when “several rounds were fired into the house” where she was staying, local news reports.
The expectant mother was reported to have been 28 weeks pregnant when she died and her baby is now fighting for its life and in a critical condition on Saturday after an emergency delivery was carried out.
Howard County police spokesperson Seth Hoffman told the Baltimore Sun officers were investigating if someone else in the building had been targeted in the attack.
The police state numerous unrelated people live in the building and an investigation is underway.
Local residents have been rocked by the violent crime, with one neighbour saying they assumed the sounds of gunfire had been noises from an overnight construction site.
He said: “This is a quiet neighbourhood. There are usually little kids playing in the street.”
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has expressed the shock and sadness felt by the community following the death of Ms Ahmad.
He said in a statement: “It is an unimaginable and unacceptable tragedy which took place in our community overnight.
“Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of Ms Ahmad and to our entire Howard County Muslim community who are shocked and saddened by the incident which occurred on Eid al-Adha, the Day of Sacrifice.”
Ms Ahmad’s boyfriend, Kadeem Bailey – who was with Ms Ahmad when she was shot – paid tribute to his late girlfriend, telling the Baltimore Sun: “She was an amazing spirit.”
Police are offering a $5,000 (£3,800) reward for any information relating to the incident which occurred at 11pm on Friday.
