A horrified Christian mum claims a priest manhandled her son as he baptised the screaming baby.
In a clip, recorded in Limassol, Cyprus, a crying and naked baby is held aloft by the priest who begins praying.
The tot is then quickly plunged underwater in the font, appearing slip and to hit one of his legs on the side of the metal basin as he is dropped down suddenly.
Although the priest struggles to hold onto the baby, grabbing him underneath, the tot does slip a little.
He plunges the baby underwater for a second time, while a woman in a green dress appears in the frame and appears to shout something while waving her arms in annoyance.
Ntina Shitta, the baby’s furious mum, uploaded the footage on Facebook and condemned the priest in the caption.
She wrote: “Today I baptized my baby! See this ‘father’ how he hits the baby.
“The baby of course was all red all over its body and in shock!”
Clearly unhappy, she accused the priest of being “horrible” and spoiling “our most beautiful day.”
The mum added: “With my lawyer, we have already been sent to all the competent departments!”
Father Panagiotis Baroutis, the priest giving the controversial baptism, explained his actions in a television interview and apologised to the family.
“The truth is that the baby at some point almost slipped from my hands and as you can see in the video I placed my arm under his hip to protect it,” local media reports.
“There was no intention on my part to hit or injure the baby.
“I have baptised many children.
“When I realised that the baby was in stress, I tried to complete the ritual as soon as possible.”
