A millionaire boss on the American website Reddit has quit his job and has called on board members to nominate a black candidate to replace him.
Co-founder Alexis Ohanian, married to tennis legend Serena Williams, struck due to a lack of diversity in the company.
In a series of tweets, he said he took action “as a father who should be able to answer his black daughter when she asks,” What did you do? “
The businessman also pledged $ 1 million (£ 800,000) to NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp – a legal awareness campaign set up by the American footballer.
In a video, he said, “I think layoffs can be an act of leadership of those in power right now.
“To anyone fighting to restore our broken nation, don’t stop.”
Steve Huffman, chief executive at Reddit – who describes himself as “the front page of the Internet” – has said the company will honor Ohanian’s request.
He also said that Reddit is working to address racist statements on the site.
The murder of George Floyd, who died after a white police officer was shot with his knee on his neck, sparked discussion about diversity in the American boardrooms.
Mr. Huffman admitted that there was an “unacceptable gap” between Reddit’s policies and values, which has reduced the company’s effectiveness in combating hatred and racism.
He wrote, “This current policy only lists what you cannot do, does not articulate any of the values behind the rules, and does not explicitly take a position on hatred or racism.”
Huffman also said that Reddit should have acted faster in a supporter forum for U.S. President Donald Trump, which threatened violence against police and officials.
Earlier this week, former CEO Ellen Pao had a hit at Reddit when Huffman wrote a letter to employees in response to the protests.
She tweeted that Reddit should have shut down the forum rather than reinforcing “hate, racism and violence.”
