Rockies sign first-round pick Zac Veen for $5 million, agree to terms with two other draft picks

The top high school prospect in the 2020 draft class is officially a Rockie, as Colorado signed outfielder Zac Veen to a $5 million signing bonus on Wednesday.

Colorado also signed two other draft picks at full-slot value, left-hander Sam Weatherly (third round out of Clemson, $755,300) and shortstop Jack Blomgren (fifth round out of Michigan, $394,300). The team has now signed four of its six picks, including right-hander Case Williams (fourth round out of Douglas County, $450,000) last week.

Veen, 18, was picked No. 9 overall. His left-handed swing with raw power, coupled with a strong throwing arm and speed, made him the most projectable prep player in the draft. Dedication in the weight room enabled him to come into his own during his last couple years at Spruce Creek High in Port Orange, Fla., where he became the state’s Gatorade player of the year.

“I put in the work and I thought I had the skills,” Veen said of his time as a scrawny younger ballplayer, “but I had to wait for my body to get bigger and stronger.”

Veen is the highest-picked prep player by the Rockies since they took pitcher Riley Pint at No. 4 overall in 2016. Pint hasn’t advanced past the lower minors, but Colorado has had better luck with its other most recent high school player taken in the upper first-round, 2015’s No. 3 overall selection of Brendan Rodgers.

Weatherly, 21, was a starter in a shortened 2020 for Clemson after spending all of the 2019 season out of the bullpen. Across 39 appearances with nine starts in his college career, he was 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA.

Blomgren, 21, was Colorado’s sixth and final pick of the draft. A NCAA College World Series all-tournament team selection for the Wolverines in 2019, he led Michigan through 15 games in 2020 with a .444 on-base average. Blomgren is a contact hitter with above-grade on-base skills and a plus glove.
