The doctor on duty when the fire took hold is said to be being treated for burns to 80% of his body.

He was reportedly wearing coronavirus PPE and trying to evacuate other patients to safety when the flames took hold.

The victims are being transported to the burns unit at another hospital, in Iasi, following the fire on Saturday night.

Reports said it began on one ward on the second floor of the building in a unit where coronavirus patients were being treated, then began spreading to others.

Police and fire crews are at the hospital working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Prosecutors were on standby to take over the investigation, reports said.
