Strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on Richter scale hits sparking tsunami warning

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has hit near the coast of northern Chile, sparking a tsunami warning.

The quake struck near Vallenar, Chile, sparking fears of a tsunami in the Pacific.

Initial reports suggested the quake measured 6.8, but the the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences has since revised the number.

It earlier showed the magnitude as 7 and 6.7, with the quake at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

There was no tsunami threat from the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A tsunami warning was in place, with Pacific islands monitoring the situation.

KITV4 in Hawaii reports: “The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirms that there is no tsunami threat to the Hawaiian islands after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Northern Chile on Monday.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the United States Geological Survey detected the quake at 9.09pm local time.

The news site reported the quake could be felt far beyond the epicentre and was potentially disastrous.

Earthquakes are common in the region of South America.

Last year, a powerful earthquake has shaken large parts of Colombia in a terrifying start to Christmas Eve.

The 6.0 magnitude tremor struck close to the country’s largest cities of Bogota, Cali and Medellin, and lasted for at least 30 seconds.

One Twitter user wrote: “I get out from a country where earthquakes are frequent (Peru) and go on vacation to Colombia only to have two consecutive earthquakes right now.”

The quake’s depth was around 10km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Professional meteorologist Timothy Wright tweeted to note that the second quake was “a bit stronger” than the initial earthquake, which caused light shaking.
