Surprise birthday party caught on camera leaves 18 infected with coronavirus

A family has left shaken after 18 attendees of a surprise birthday party tested positive for coronavirus.

Chilling video has now emerged of the scene where the partygoers contracted the virus and spread to other relatives in May 30.

Ron Barbosa and 20 other relatives including young children and elderly, attended the party for his daughter-in-law at her home in Carrollton, North Texas.

They were seen hugging and standing in close distance while enjoying the celebration.

Three people have been hospitalised, including Ron’s parents, who are in their 80s, and his sister Kathy, who is battling breast cancer.

It was later found out that Ron’s nephew was unknowingly infected when he showed up at the party with a slight cough.

Ron, a volunteer EMT, told local media WFAA: “It wasn’t that long. It was only a couple of hours.

“But during that brief time, somehow the other 18 family members are now infected with Covid.”

He said there were 25 people attended the party and not all of them arrived at the same time or stayed for the same duration.

The family gathering later created a coronavirus cluster with 18 people infected

“When people started getting sick, we really let everyone have it,” he added.

“We knew this was going to happen, I mean this whole time this has been going on we’ve been terrified.”

Ron said his father Frank is staying in the intensive care unit and is on life support.

“My dad’s hanging on by a thread,” Ron added. “They’re saying this is one of the last straws for my dad.”

Doctors said there’s not much they can do until they can get blood plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients, who have established antibodies.

Ron has made an appeal on Facebook to ask people with coronavirus antibodies to donate their plasma.

The US state of Texas has seen a rise in coronavirus cases this week – with 4,389 patients currently hospitalised.
