COLLEGE PARK, Md. >> Taulia Tagovailoa, a backup quarterback in Alabama behind star brother Tua Tagovailoa, moves to Maryland.
He announced the decision on Twitter today.
“This decision was not an easy one and has been prayed non-stop. Thank you to my pastors and my family for always interceding on my behalf, ”Tagovailoa said. “Today I am blessed to share that I will continue my academic and athletic journey at the University of Maryland. I am grateful to Coach Locksley and the staff for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to go to College Park. God bless & Go Terps! “
The 5 foot-11 quarterback needs a waiver to qualify this season. He played five games as a freshman last season, completing 9 of 12 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Mike Locksley of Maryland coached Tua, selected fifth overall in the NFL Draft by Miami, as an offensive coordinator for Alabama.
Taulia played his first two seasons of high school football in Kapolei, where he threw for 6,703 yards and 64 touchdowns in 23 games.
