A couple, awakened by the “howling wind” in the middle of the night, saw a highly poisonous spitting cobra slip into their toilet.
They immediately called for help as the snake continued to sneak through their home in Durban, South Africa.
A video of the dramatic incident, recorded Nov. 14, shows snake expert Jason Arnold catching the Mozambique-spitting cobra (Naja mossambica) from under the couple’s refrigerator after a prolonged stalemate.
In the clip, the snake extends its tongue as Jason slowly approaches with a special tool.
The snake catcher grabs the snake’s head and slowly pulls its body out from under the refrigerator with his other hand.
He then warns that the snake can still spit, in order to stay well out of reach.
Jason said he got a call from the frightened couple after they were awakened by hissing noises and bangs coming from the bathroom.
At first they thought it was the howling wind, but the couple eventually got out of bed to investigate, only to find that the highly poisonous animal was crawling among their bathroom products.
The couple closed the bathroom with a towel cover, but the four-foot-long cobra managed to escape and roamed the house calling several snake catchers nearby.
By the time Jason arrived from two previous calls, the deadly snake was lurking under the couple’s refrigerator.
The snake catcher later said he will release the cobra into the wild on a nice warm day this week.
Jason added that the name of the Mozambique spitting cobra is somewhat misleading as they are not only found in Mozambique, but are also common in neighboring countries such as South Africa.
They can also be found in Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
