The exact date to buy your Christmas presents to save £400

With just 100 days until Christmas and two thirds of Brits admitting they’re saving as much money as possible at the moment, shoppers will be glad to hear you could save more than £400 if you buy on the right day.

Whether it’s a Nintendo Switch to keep your children happy, or a yoga mat to bring some zen to your partner’s life, expert analysts at price comparison site idealo.co.uk have used their lead out data to predict 2020’s popular pressies and when you can save the most cash on purchasing them.

Summer 2020 saw huge spikes in specific product categories such as home gym equipment, gardening, tech and baking, providing Brits activities for lockdown life. Many took up exercising at home with a 5,800 per cent spike in home gym equipment sales. Trainers were also the most popular product for 11 weeks in a row with 57 per cent of shoppers making a purchase.

With this in mind, and combining data of the sell-out products of last year’s Christmas, idealo have created a wish list for UK customers that advises on the best time to buy in the run up to the big day.

The biggest savings can be made on exercise equipment such as bikes and weights where purchasing a bike in September could save you £436 compared to November where it could set you back £881. Skateboards are also best to buy in December where you can save £168.

Results show that it is best to snap these up sooner rather than later with home workout weights being cheapest in September in the run up to Christmas, boasting savings of up to £112.

Using last year’s data, idealo can provide buyers a little guidance on the best dates to look out for in order to get the best deals. In 2019, the cheapest day to purchase a Nintendo Switch was September 19, where you could buy it for £198.50.

For Airpods, December 11 was the best time where they were being sold for £110, a similar time for iPhone 11’s which you could pick up cheapest on December 13 for £554.

For those with designer perfumes on their lists, November 25 was the best time to buy Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum at £45.50. And for boys, Chanel Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum Aftershave came in at £53.37 on October 6.

With gamers increasing playing time by 80 per cent in lockdown and Sony PS4 sales up 2,900 per cent, FIFA 21 is predicted to be one of the most popular Christmas gifts. December is the month to watch out for as last year’s FIFA 20 could be picked up for £23.99 on December 15, 2019, and this year is predicted to be cheapest this month again.

Katy Philips at idealo said: “Comparing prices across a range of products can truly help you find a better deal. At a time where saving money is paramount for some, being able to check multiple retailer costings at once can prove a hugely helpful resource. We’re expecting buying habits of this Christmas to be very different from previous years, with further emphasis on home working and entertainment, as well as products that improve our health and wellbeing.

“Online prices fluctuate all the time and many retailers use dynamic pricing algorithms to automatically adjust their prices according to a range of factors including supply, demand, competition, market trends, events, and even the weather! So the reasoning behind certain days being cheaper than others lies most likely in outside factors, the most common being retailers wanting to make sure their prices stay attractive and competitive against the competition.

“The cheapest times to buy each item vary, so while the predicted days in our research can serve as a guide for consumers, the best way to make the biggest savings is to start your research early and set price alerts, particularly for big ticket purchases.”
