The way the central government has repeatedly shut down the internet has resulted in a loss of ৮ 2.8 billion or ৮ 2.7 billion in 2020 alone.
The report has been submitted to the Lok Sabha by the panel. A report titled “Suspension of Telecom and Internet Service and Its Impact” has been tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology headed by Shashi Tharoor.
In addition to the financial losses, it was also mentioned that the frequent shutdown of telecom and internet services has also affected the lives of ordinary people. In January 2020, the Supreme Court stated that the right to use the Internet was vested in the general public under Article 19.
The panel was formed anew in October this year. Shashi Tharoor was appointed as the chairman of the panel. That panel examined the financial loss caused by the Internet shutdown. The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that the impact of the Internet shutdown on the lives of ordinary people needs to be ascertained.
By law, the Internet can be shut down only for emergencies and security reasons. The panel’s report said the problem was that there was no specific law on Internet shutdown. In other words, there is no specific policy under which the Internet can be turned off. More problems have been created as no policy has been formulated.

The report also mentions that an SOP or guideline needs to be prepared in this regard. There is also talk of creating a database that will contain information on how often Internet services are shutting down and what causes them to shut down.
