Third of criminal convictions for women are for not having TV Licence

According to figures, nearly a third of all criminal convictions against women in 2019 were for not having a TV license.

Justice Department figures show women are ten times more likely to be caught without a license than men, it reports The mirror.

There were 114,000 successful prosecutions for TV permit evasion in 2019 – and 74 percent of those convicted were women.

Those 84,000 TV license evasion offenses make up 30 percent of all female convictions in 2019.

In men it was only four percent.

Kate Paradine, chief executive of Women in Prison, stressed, “Debt-related issues should not be criminalized.

“Even if you tackle all the convictions and look at women in prison, the majority are there for very minor offenses.”

Only 1% of the nearly 4,000 women currently behind bars are there for violent crimes.
