Three young girls, including an eight-month-old baby, have been found dead after being suffocated.
Their mum has been arrested after she told police she had killed her children and wanted to kill herself.
The 31-year-old woman, said to be from Nepal, called police in Vienna, Austria, at 5.20am local time this morning, October 17.
According to a preliminary investigation, the girls were suffocated.
Officers went to the family’s apartment in the suburban Donaustadt district of Austria’s capital city.
They arrested the mum who was suffering from self-inflicted injuries, a police spokesperson said.
The bodies of three children – aged nine, three and eight months – were found inside the home.
The eldest girl was taken to hospital where she died despite attempts to revive her.
Investigations remain ongoing while officers determine if the woman is fit to be questioned.
Police said the background to the incident is currently unknown. Officers spoke to relatives of the mum and were told that the girls’ dad is believed to be living in Vienna, but the pair are thought to be separated.
A police spokesperson said in a statement: “Today in the early hours of the morning a woman, aged 31, called the police emergency number and stated that she had just killed her children and now wanted to kill herself.
“During an immediate search of the home, the police found two girls, aged eight months and three years, who were dead.
“A third girl, aged nine, was taken to hospital but resuscitation was unsuccessful.
“A forensic medical report on the cause of death is still pending. A statement from the suspect is not yet available.
The mum was discovered with non-life-threatening injuries and was immediately detained, according to reports.
Post-mortem examinations were due to take place later on Saturday.
