A small puppy was rescued from a frozen pond after she slipped her collar off while being transported to a rescue organization.
Spring, a shih tzu, accidentally wandered the partially frozen pond in Lake County, Ohio.
She had just been rescued from a puppy mill in Indiana and was on her way to New York when the transport vehicle pulled up for a break outside Mentor and somehow she got loose.
While the rescue transport had to continue with the rest of the dogs to New York, they contacted the local shih tzu foster care Hupp to see if she could find the little dog.
Hupp also got Spring’s sister Dawn because the two are a bonded couple.
On Sunday morning, Hupp received reports that Spring had been sighted, and when she arrived at the scene, she discovered that the dog had entered a semi-frozen pond and became trapped.
Fortunately, two heroic firefighters responded to the call, jumping into the water and paddling between ice shelves to reach the terrified dog.
The rescue footage shows Spring jumping happily into the arms of the firefighters.
“Chandon FD personnel were happy to take to the ice to help this furry friend (of) morning on Little Mountain Road,” the Chardon fire department said in a statement.
Happy Endings, it added.
It took spring a day or two to recover from her terrifying experience, but Hupp told Inside Edition that she is “really recovering and asking for rubs and pets.”
She added, “She doesn’t seem shocked at all anymore.”
Hupp continues to take care of Spring and Dawn until they find a permanent home. Her other pets, including a miniature poodle named Ginger, help them acclimate and get comfortable around people.
Spring and Daisy will be available for adoption by the Shih Tzus & Furbabies Small Breed Rescue next January.
