Trump says Florida convention canceled after coronavirus spike

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he will no longer hold a large gathering in Florida in August to accept the Republican Party nomination, following a spike in coronavirus cases in the state.

“The timing for this event is not right,” Trump said in a White House news conference. “It just doesn’t fit with what happened recently, the Florida flare-up. To hold a big convention, now is not the time.”

The event, initially scheduled for Charlotte, North Carolina, was moved to Jacksonville, Florida after the North Carolina Governor declined to guarantee Trump could hold a major event in the state.
