Two new places surge into top 10 for new coronavirus cases in England

Two new areas have entered the top 120 list of places in England seeing the most rapid rise in cases of coronavirus – and neither has yet had any lockdown restrictions.

The test statistics from Public Health England show that Corby in Northamptonshire and South Tyneside have experienced a rapid growth in cases in the last week.

Only Pendle and emerging hotspot Bolton – which have both had restrictions in place – are above Corby in the most recent list of infection rates in England.

The Northamptonshire town had 41 new cases in the seven days up to August 29, amounting to a rate per 100,000 people of 56.8, up from 22.2 the week before, reports The Mirror.

And South Tyneside reported 62 new cases, a rate of 41.1, up from 18 (11.9) in the week up to August 22.

Leeds reported 249 new cases in the last week, a rate of 31.4, while Great Yarmouth in Norfolk currently has a 32.2 infection rate.

There was also a surge in coronavirus cases in Rossendale and Bolton, both previously covered by local lockdown rules, but now having restrictions lifted.

Bolton Council leader David Greenhalgh urged the government to reconsider lifting lockdown measures, and the town recorded 170 cases in the last week, registering the second highest infection rate in England at 59.1.

Data for the most recent three days (August 30-September 1) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Pendle, 66 new cases were recorded in the seven days to August 29 – the equivalent of 71.7 per 100,000 people. This is the highest rate in England, and it is up slightly from 68.4 in the seven days to August 22.

Oldham, Blackburn with Darwen and Manchester reported falling cases, while the other areas covered by local lockdown, aside from Bolton, experienced only modest rises in infections.

Here is the list in full. Total cases are in brackets. The second set of numbers is the comparable figures for the previous week.
