Typhoon winds cause crane to collapse as 'operator leaps into sea to escape'

This is the horrifying moment typhoon winds caused a crane to collapse before its operator reportedly leaped into the sea to escape.

Footage taken in the coastal city of Taizhou, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, captured the moment the shipping container crane was pushed by gale-force winds on Friday.

In the video, the giant portal crane with a loading capacity of 10 tonnes is pushed along its rails before tearing through its brake clamps.

As the rig topples into the East China Sea, the footage also appears to capture its operator rushing down the steps before the tiny figure is seen leaping into the water to safety.

According to reports, the operator was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries, while a second gantry crane was also derailed by the strong typhoon winds.

A spokesperson for the docks said no other damage was reported, and there were no other injuries.

However, it was unclear why the container cranes were allowed to operate under such strong winds.

It happened a day before Typhoon Nuri – the second typhoon-category tropical storm – made landfall in South China.

An investigation is ongoing.
