Village called ‘F***ing’ changes name after unwanted tourist attention

An Austrian village called “F *** ing” will change its name to “Fugging” after the tourist attention became too much for residents to bear.

The town’s name has attracted English speakers who have been joking and taking pictures over the years at signs with the word “F *** ing”.

Despite having only 100 inhabitants, the village has become widely known after photos and videos were shared on social media by tourists visiting the area 350 km west of Vienna.

Some visitors have also reportedly stolen signposts, meaning local authorities had to resort to theft-proof alternatives when replacing them.

But after years of ridicule, the locals – known as F *** ingers – decided they’d had enough and started pushing for a change of the town’s name.

Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tarsdorf, the municipality to which the village belongs, confirmed that “F *** ing” will change its name on January 1st.

He told Upper Austrian news “I really don’t want to say any more – we’ve had enough media frenzy about this in the past.”

It is not clear why the village was called “F *** ing”, but some experts say it dates back to the 11th century.

It is believed that the city was first settled in 1070.

The name, which will be changed in early 2021, has nothing to do with the English swear word, but is spelled the same way due to a strange coincidence.

According to Oberösterreichische Nachrichten, the name could be associated with Adalpert von Vuckingen, who lived in the region in the 11th century.

But the name “F *** ing” can even date back to the sixth century, as it is reported that a Bavarian nobleman named Focko founded a settlement in the area.

A cadastral map from 1825 mentions the village of Fuking – and it is not clear when or why the “c” was added, making it sound like the English swear word.

Locals have long been asking to change the name of the city.

Years ago, villagers said they got calls from pranksters from abroad asking them in English, “Is that F *** ing?”

There have also been reports of naked couples romping in front of the plates.

Local business owners did not help ease the pressure that the locals felt when they started using the town’s name to promote their products – such as F *** ing Christmas cards or F *** ing beer.

Across the border between Austria and Germany, there are a few towns with very peculiar names – Kiss, Stroke, Fuck (which is now going to be Fugging) and finally Wedding.
