USC update: The Trojans held steady at No. 20 in the AP Top 25 after a wild come-from-behind, 28-27 victory over Arizona State. … QB Kedon Slovis set a USC single-game record with 40 completions as he threw two fourth-down touchdown passes in a 92-second span to secure the win. … The USC defense had a mixed debut under coordinator Todd Orlando. The Trojans were gashed on the ground but held ASU QB Jayden Daniels to 11-for-23 passing for 134 yards and one touchdown. … The standout on defense was tackle Marlon Tuipulotu, who had eight tackles, two for loss and a sack. … The Trojans won last year’s matchup with Arizona handily, 41-14, behind a two-touchdown performance by RB Kenan Christon. USC forced three turnovers in that game and held Arizona to 5-for-16 on third down.
Arizona update: The Wildcats were supposed to open the season against Utah on Saturday but the game was canceled due COVID-19 spread on the Utes’ roster. … Arizona, in its third year under head coach Kevin Sumlin, was picked to finish last in the Pac-12 South in the preseason media poll. … Sophomore QB Grant Gunnell is the new starter at Arizona. The pro-style quarterback, who was a four-star recruit in high school, completed 101 of 155 passes last season for 1,239 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception in eight games, including three starts. … Arizona ranked last in the Pac-12 in 2019 in total defense, allowing opponents 471.4 yards per game. The Wildcats also ranked 12th in the conference in scoring defense as opponents scored an average of 35.8 points per game.
