England’s chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser will today present the evidence behind plans for second national lockdown across the country coming into force on Thursday.
Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance will present the scientific evidence behind the measures that will close pubs, shops and restaurants and ban household mixing across England.
The two, most commonly seen flanking Prime Minister Boris Johnson at Downing Street press conferences, will give evidence on the science behind the England lockdown to Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee.
The presentation comes after Mr Johnson announced the planned second national lockdown to the nation on Saturday, then spoke to Parliament on Monday.
The proposed move will be discussed and voted on by MPs on Wednesday before coming into law at 00:01 on Thursday.
All non-essential retail will be closed and the hospitality sector – such as restaurants – will only be able to offer takeaway and deliveries.
The presentation at 2.30pm will come after a Cabinet meeting at 9.30am. That coincides with the Office for National Statistics releasing the latest weekly number of Covid deaths in England and Wales.
Economic support during the lockdown will be discussed in the House of Commons today from 12.30pm.
Coronavirus will also be discussed today in the House of Lords.
The Welsh Government is to give a briefing on the situation at 12.15pm.
