The number 27 ball is the luckiest number to play in UK and Irish lotteries, according to new research.
The Paddy Power Lotteries study analysed more than 3,000 draws across the UK Lotto, Thunderball, EuroMillions and the Irish Lotto, finding that the 27-ball has the highest appearance rate of any number, even when accounting for the differently sized ball pools for each game.
Considering the average proportion of selections that each ball appears, 27 gets picked in an average of 13.3 per cent of draws.
That’s over 1.5 times more often than the unluckiest ball (57), which appears in just 8.6 per cent of possible instances.
The second luckiest ball is 54 with 12.9 per cent frequency followed by 54, 52,58, 42 and 29 – all with 12.7 per cent frequency
A spokesman for Paddy Power Lotteries said: “You can base your decisions off birthdays, your favourite footballer’s shirt number or by picking at random, but we’ve tried to come up with something a little more scientific.
“We just feel sorry for the boffin who had to trawl through over 3,000 draws to come up with these figures.”
