A woman pushed her friend into a reservoir before both of them drowned in a disturbing incident captured on CCTV.

Footage seen by the Mirror Online shows two women standing near the edge of the water in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, when the woman wearing an orange jumper bends down to tie her shoelace.

As she does so, the other women appears to forcefully push her into the water from behind.

Both women are seen falling into the reservoir in the incident which happened on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that the pair of them drowned, Yahoo News reports.

CCTV of the shocking incident has gone viral in China with an investigation launched on Thursday.

People online have been speculating as to what caused the shocking events.

Police are expected to release details of their probe into the two deaths in due course.

They believe the woman who pushed her friend has been suffering from depression and had been prescribed medication, reports say.
