A young bride jumped off a shopping mall balcony when her new husband killed himself barely two weeks after their wedding.
Sania Khandelwal, a medical student in her early 20s, suffered serious injuries to her head and legs when she hurled herself off the third floor of a shopping mall in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, India, on Friday morning.
She survived what’s believed to have been a suicide attempt and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Indore’s MY hospital.
On Wednesday her new husband Subham Khandelwal, a contractor in Ujjain district about 50 km away, had taken his own life.
The 32-year-old was found in his car having consumed poison and then been in a road accident.
He left behind a note blaming two engineers from the local municipal corporation for his death, claiming they had subjected him to harassment.
Within hours the Ujjain Police registered a case against Naresh Jain and Sanjay Khujeni, both two junior engineers of Ujjain Nagar Nigam, and a third person named Chinnu for abetment to suicide.
Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the death of Subham, who had married his bride just 15 days earlier.
Sania’s father had come to take her home to Faridabad, Haryana following Subham’s death. They were staying in a hotel and were scheduled to take a flight on Friday afternoon.
That morning Sania told her dad she was going to get some fruit juice, but in fact went to the shopping mall in Vijay Nagar, some 6km from the hotel, and jumped from the third floor.
Police say they found a note she had written expressing her desire to join her husband.
“It is a case of attempt to suicide,” Indore city superintendent of police, Rakesh Gupta, told media.
“The woman has been hospitalised. We are looking into the matter.”
